Have you ever wondered why your car seems to pull to one side of the road while driving along in a straight line? Or, why your car tyres seem to only wear out on the edges, rather than uniformly? If so, then there’s a good chance that these are symptoms of poorly aligned steering. Or, to put it another way, your steering geometry is out of alignment.
Misaligned steering geometry can be caused by many reasons, but mostly misaligned wheel alignment is caused by pot holes you’ve driven through, or kerb stones you’ve driven over.
At MSC near Billingshurst, we use a state-of-the-art 4 wheel laser alignment system, the Hunter Hawkeye Elite Alignment System, to ensure your car or van’s wheels are always pointing in the right direction, forwards. Our wheel alignment experts understand what’s needed to get the best from your vehicle. This will not only improve the life span of your car tyres, but also give you better miles per gallon. Having properly aligned steering is a win-win situation.
Let’s take a look at some common questions we get asked about our 4 wheel laser alignment system:
What is 4 wheel laser alignment?
Our laser alignment system uses laser beams controlled by a computer to check that all four wheels are adjusted correctly, and pointing in the correct direction. Which, surprisingly, isn’t directly straight ahead. Most car’s front wheels are angled slightly outwards, this is referred to as ‘toe out’, this helps the car to drive smoothly and helps to centre the steering wheel.
Special targets are attached to the wheels of the car, and depending on where the laser beams of our alignment system hits the target, will tell our technician how much they need to adjust the position of each wheel.
How long does an alignment take?
As long as nothing on your vehicle’s steering system is seized up, and we can access the adjustment mechanisms easily, it should only take about 30 minutes to check and adjust your wheel alignment.
Is it worth getting wheel alignment?
Yes, it’s actually worth checking annually, especially if you do the UK average mileage of 10,000 miles a year, or more. When you consider the cost of new tyres these days, getting your wheel alignment checked and adjusted, which helps to minimise tyre wear, makes sense. Never mind the fact that you’ll use less fuel doing those 10,000 miles.
