Let’s take a quick look at some common questions we frequently get asked at MSC.
What is an MOT test?
An MOT test is an annual inspection of your vehicle to check that it meets a minimum set of standards to ensure it is roadworthy and safe to drive.
Are MOT Tests the same as services?
No, the MOT test and a car service are very different, and a lot of people get confused by the two. In general terms, a car or van service is concerned with the mechanical reliability of your vehicle, whereas MOT tests are more concerned about your vehicle being safe to be driven on the road.
A good example of this would be your engine oil. During a service the engine oil and oil filter will be replaced, but we do not do this during an MOT test. There are however similar checks carried out during both. The brakes, for example, are checked for function during an MOT test, but only checked for wear during a service. We do road test a vehicle after a service however, so poorly performing brakes will still be detected, albeit by a different process.
What’s the difference between a full service and an interim service?
Generally speaking, an interim service consists of an engine oil and filter change, along with a visual check under the vehicle. We’ll also make sure your tyres, fluid levels and lights/wipers are all as they should be. A full service adds to this list, we’ll check your brakes for wear, and replace the air filter. Then, depending on mileage, if it needs spark plugs, fuel filter and pollen filters, they too will be changed. There are also many other checks and adjustment made during the service.
Do you complete my car service history book?
Yes, keeping accurate records of your vehicles service history is important as it helps to maintain the second-hand value of your vehicle.
Can I drive my car if it fails the MOT Test?
There are different kinds of failure on MOT Tests, but if it fails on items considered to be ‘dangerous’ or ‘major’ problems with your vehicle. You might not be legally allowed to drive until you fix the problems. This means if you remove your vehicle from our MOT test station near Billingshurst after it’s failed, you should do so using a recovery vehicle. If you can legally take your vehicle away, it must still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times. It’s your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy at all times.
